test borehole / trial borehole: Certainty before the major project

For large geothermal projects, a test borehole / trial borehole can provide important data for the design / system sizing of the probe field. Whether it makes sense will be clarified in the planning. For an ordinary single-family house, it is not the norm.

Expiry date

This is how a test borehole / trial borehole runs

Check location

Local specifications, location conditions and access are clarified, much of it at the desk before a device arrives.

Drilling and installing probe

The drill partner determines the diameter based on geology, equipment and local specifications. The substrate is documented, the Splitpipe probe is installed and pressed.

Measure and refine planning

After installation of the probe, the thermal properties are measured. The results are used for the precise determination of probe number and probe depth. The installed probe remains part of the system.

Reducing drilling diameter

Smaller drilling > building smaller

Drilling diameter

108 mm

Comparative Example with 132 mm; the actual diameter depends on the project and local specifications

Drilling equipment

5 t

instead of 12-t device; According to drilling contractor, the daily rates for a 5-t device are significantly lower than for a 12-t device.

drill cuttings

−43 %

100 mm instead of 132 mm borehole

Probe tube

51 mm

Pre- and return in a two-chamber pipe

Do I need a permit?

Requirements vary by country and region. Your drill partner clarifies for the specific location whether a permit, a notification or further proof is necessary. This applies to projects in Switzerland as well as in Germany and Austria.

How long does the drilling itself take?

For a single-family home, typically two to four working days. Setting up, drilling, probe setting and pressing included. The compact device does not need a construction line.

What do I need to prepare?

The required access width and footprint depend on the drilling tool of the executing partner. Water and electricity supply as well as existing lines in the ground are clarified during the walk.

separatus does not drill itself. A network of regional drilling contractor carries out the work. Who likes the short way, finds his partner directly:

Short borehole heat exchangers in Vorarlberg: For a holiday home on the Bartholomäberg, the separatus partner network realizes six probes à 60 metres in sophisticated geology. separatus takes over simulation and design / system sizing, plank the drilling and installation, Geser Erdwärme the hydraulic connection.

Waxeneck (AT) - geothermal energy at an idyllic forest location

In Waxeneck Lower Austria, another geothermal project with separatus was successfully implemented. Together with WTC Brunnen & geothermal energy and the installation company Fluid Energy, two borehole heat exchangers were created, each with a depth of 100 metres. separatus took over thermal simulation and hydraulic design. The coordinated planning, the simple connection and the compact probe design reduced the installation effort and increased the process reliability. The project shows the added value of the separatus partner network from planning to commissioning.
