Cooling from the ground: Challenges and opportunities for the cities of tomorrow!

Increasing heat pollution leads to an increasing demand for cooling in buildings, for which the shallow geothermal energy offers a sustainable and energy-efficient solution. This uses borehole heat exchangers to cool buildings in the summer by dissipating excess heat into the underground. The special feature of the systems is that this heat stored in summer is available again in the heating season. This year’s event will show how this technology can make an important contribution to sustainable urban development in view of the significantly increasing cooling days. In addition, current trends and developments as well as showcase projects are presented. Organizers are GeoSphere Austria, the Verband Geothermie Österreich and the city of Vienna.

Benjamin Pernter contributes to the program with an exciting topic:

From cooling load to optimal probe planning with separatus®: Lessons Learned from a banking project

We show a project directly from practice. In the case of a renovation of a bank in the Vorarlberger Rheintal (AT), cooling was ultimately a decisive design factor. We show learnings from the planning process, such as:

  • How efficiency can be improved by adjusting the probe depth in cool-heavy systems.
  • How this can optimise the total probe length and thus reduce investment costs.
  • How separatus contributed to further cost savings.

Participation in the Vienna Geothermal Day is free of charge, but the organizers ask for registration under www.geothermie-oesterreich.at/erdwärmetag/
